<p>2. PA&#8217;s are secretaries that move around and that act like co-bosses to u. If a PA works on a play set they will sometime shave a clip board, write the bad and good things then correct it by saying it out loud to the actors..</p>
<p>3. A Personal Assistant runs errands and makes things happen, travels and does a secretary&#8217;s job when on the road, a Secretary types letters, takes notes and deals with office type stuff</p>
<p>4. A secretary would normaly be involved with admin type work typing, mailing, filing etc and answer the phone , where as a PA would manage the line managers activities to free up their resource. For example prepair meetings, make plans and update schedules etc.</p>
<p>5. Originally the difference was that a secretary could be anything from someone who took telephone messages, files and did the typing to someone who organised everything, but also could, and often did, work for more than one manager.</p>
<p>A PA would work only for one person and tended to arrange everything for their boss (usually an executive) &#8211; meetings, dentist appointments, haircuts &#8211; you name it!</p>
<p>Mind you &#8211; I have been a secretary to 4 managers but worked as a PA for one of them (who was an executive) so often the difference is what the &#8220;preferred title&#8221; is in the company you are working for and the salary that is paid (PAs command higher salaries).</p>
<p>6. Salary usually.</p>
<p>7. I don&#8217;t think there is a great difference.Probably in these days of advanced technology somewhere along the line someone thought the title of Personal Assistant sounded more professional.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The following recommendations are intended to give some advice to Universities and R&amp;D institutions worldwide in order they have an adequate web presence. Their websites should represent correctly their resources, activities and global performance, providing visitors with a true vision of the institution. We encourage medium and long term projects that give priority to the publication of large volume of quality contents under Open Access type models.</p>
<p>We reject the use of abusive positioning techniques that can generate misleading indicators.</p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>1. URL naming</strong></span></p>
<p>Each institution should <strong>choose a unique institutional domain</strong> that can be <strong>used by all the websites of the institution.</strong></p>
<p>It is very important to <strong>avoid changing </strong>the institutional domain as it <strong>can generate confusion</strong> and it has a devastating effect on the visibility values.</p>
<p>The<strong> alternative or mirror domains should be disregarded </strong>even when they redirection to the preferred one.</p>
<p>Use of<strong> well known acronyms </strong>is correct but the institution should<strong> consider including descriptive word, like the name of the city, in the domain name.<br />
</strong><br />
<span style="underline;"><strong>2. Contents: Create</strong></span></p>
<p>A large web presence is made possible only with <strong>the effort of a large group of authors.</strong> The best way to do that is<strong> allowing a large proportion of staff, researchers or graduate students to be potential authors</strong>.</p>
<p>A <strong>distributed system of authoring</strong> can be operative at several levels:</p>
<p><strong>Central organisation</strong> can be <strong>responsible of the design guidelines and institutional information</strong></p>
<p>Libraries, documentation centres and similar services can be <strong>responsible of large databases</strong>, including bibliographic ones but also large repositories (thesis, pre-prints, and reports)</p>
<p><strong>Individual persons or teams</strong> should maintain their own websites, enriching them with <strong>self archiving practices.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Hosting external resources </strong>can be interesting for third parties and increase the visibility: Conference websites, software repositories, scientific societies and their publications, especially electronic journals.</p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>3. Contents: Convert</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Important resources </strong>are available in <strong>non electronic format that can be converted </strong>to web pages easily. Most of the universities have a long record of activities that can be published in historical web sites.</p>
<p>Other resources are also candidate for conversion, including past activities reports or pictures collections.</p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>4. Interlinking</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>The Web is a hipertextual corpus with links connecting pages.</strong> If your contents are not known (bad design, limited information, or minority language), the size is scarce or they have low quality, the site probably will receive few links from other sites.<br />
<strong><br />
Measuring and classifying the links f</strong>rom others can be insightful. You should expect links from your “natural” partners: Institutions from your locality or region, web directories from similar organisations, portals covering your topics, colleagues or partners personal pages. Your pages should make an impact in your common language community.</p>
<p>Check for the orphaned pages, i.e. pages not linked from another.</p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>5. Language, especially English</strong><noscript><a href="http://www.sibresource.ru/">&#1083;&#1072;&#1085;&#1076;&#1096;&#1072;&#1092;&#1090; &#1058;&#1102;&#1084;&#1077;&#1085;&#1100;</a></noscript></span></p>
<p>The Web <strong>audience is truly global</strong>, so you <strong>should not think locally.</strong> Language versions, especially in <strong>English, are mandatory not only for the main pages, but for selected sections</strong> and specially from scientific documents.</p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>6. Rich and media files</strong></span></p>
<p>Although html is the standard format of web pages, sometimes it is better to use rich file formats like Adobe <strong>Acrobat pdf or MS Word doc as they allow a better distribution of documents</strong>. PostScript is a popular format in certain areas (physics, engineering, mathematics) but it can be difficult to open, so it is recommended to provide an alternative version in pdf format.</p>
<p>Bandwidth is growing exponentially, so it is a good investment to archive all media materials produced in <strong>web repositories.</strong> Collections of videos, interviews, presentations, animated graphs, and even digital pictures could be <strong>very useful in the long term.</strong></p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>7. Search engine friendly designs</strong></span></p>
<p>Avoid <strong>cumbersome navigation menus based on Flash, Java or JavaScript that can block the robot access.</strong> <strong>Deep nested directories or complex interlinking can block robots too.</strong></p>
<p>Databases and even highly dynamic pages can be invisible for some search engines, so <strong>use directories or static pages instead or as an option.</strong></p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>8. Popularity and statistics</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Number of visits is important, </strong>but it as much as important to monitor their origin, distribution and the causes why they reach your web sites. Most of the current <strong>log analysers </strong>offer a great diversity of tables and graphs showing relevant <strong>demographic and geographic data,</strong> but make sure there is an option to show the referrers, the web pages from which the visit arrives or the search term or phrase used if the visit came from a search engine.</p>
<p>Most popular pages or directories are also relevant.</p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>9. Archiving and persistence</strong></span></p>
<p>To <strong>maintain a copy of old or outdated material in the site should be mandatory. </strong>Sometimes relevant information is lost when the site is redesigned or simply updated and there is no way to recover easily the vanished pages.</p>
<p><span style="underline;"><strong>10. Standards for enriching sites</strong></span></p>
<p>The use of <strong>meaningful titles and descriptive metatags can increase the visibility of the pages.</strong> There are some standards like <strong>Dublin Core </strong>that can be used to add authoring info, keywords and other data about the web sites.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In order to be able to practice Islam effectively in our lives, we must gain knowledge of it from authentic sources &#8211; the Quran and sunnah (way of life of the Prophet Muhammad [Allah's peace and blessings be upon him]). If we don&#8217;t make an extra effort for studying these sources, we will never be able to fully understand them. Therefore, it is best to form a &#8220;study circle,&#8221; a group of people studying the Quran and sunnah together&#8211;a method that develops strong mutual bonds and keeps everyone tuned in to gaining an Islamic education.</p>
<p>In order to know the dos and don&#8217;ts of studying Islam as a group, we can heed advice given by some companions of the Prophet Muhammad [Allah's peace and blessings be upon him]:</p>
<p>‘Ikrimah bin Abî Jahl narrated that ‘Abdullâh bin ‘Abbâs said, “Preach to the people once a week, and if you won’t, then preach to them twice; but if you want to preach more, then let it be three times (a week only) and do not make the people fed-up with this Qur’ân. If you come to some people who are engaged in a talk, don&#8217;t start interrupting their talk by preaching, lest you should cause them to be bored. You should rather keep quiet, and if they ask you, then preach to them at the time when they are eager to hear what you say. And avoid the use of rhymed prose in invocation for I noticed that Allâh’s Messenger and his Companions always avoided it.”<br />
[Sahih Al-Bukhâri 8/349]</p>
<p>The following steps need to be taken in order to start a Quran study circle:</p>
<p>Get people together. Without people, there is no group, but even two people can start a study circle. You can get your best friend or sister to come over for starters. If you have time, you can make flyers or posters about the study circle, and put them up on your building notice board, or have them distributed in your neighborhood. With time, the word will get out and soon, people might bring a friend or a neighbor. That is how the circle will expand.<br />
Assign roles to each member of the group. If one person is the most knowledgeable in the Quran and good at oration, then he could be the speaker, while another could offer a room of his house as the circle venue, especially if his house is larger. Another person can bring a small snack to be eaten at the end of the circle, during discussion. As the group size increases, there will be more roles and a greater need for being organized, so assigning roles is important.<br />
Select a suitable time. The time, duration and weekly frequency of the group should be decided, keeping in mind the schedules of all those who attend. For example, if the majority of the group members are stay-at-home mothers, a good time would be mid-morning, when children are at school. If the group consists of working men, they can arrange a study circle on the weekend or after the last prayer (&#8217;isha) on a weekday. The intention is for everyone to enjoy studying the Quran and sunnah consistently, and not be overburdened. Abdullâh bin Mas‘ûd narrated, &#8220;The Prophet used to be considerate of us in preaching, by selecting a suitable time, so that we might not get bored.” [Sahih Al-Bukhâri 1/68] The duration of the group should be enough to cover important topics without people getting exhausted or bored. An hour or so is usually more than enough.<br />
Set an agenda or timetable for the group. There is an ocean of knowledge to gain! However, wisdom must be employed in choosing the topics to delve into. For example, in the first 10 minutes, a few verses of the Quran can be recited. The next 20 minutes can be given to translation and exegesis/explanation of those verses. After that, a paragraph or two from any book of the Prophet Muhammad&#8217;s sunnah [his way of life, his mannerisms] can be read out. Finally, the last 15 minutes can be dedicated to a discussion on the practical application, in everyday life, of the knowledge just gained. The circle should be culminated with collective invocation/prayer to Allah/dua.<br />
Act upon what is taught. It is very important to intend to act upon the knowledge of the Quran being acquired. If group members see that they are not changing for the better, they should politely remind each other to act upon what they have learned. They should kindly exhort others towards patience, constancy and steadfastness, especially if a student becomes unmotivated. That is one of the main purposes of group-based learning: Students keep each other tied into the group.<br />
Abû Wa‘il Shaqîq bin Salamah narrated that ‘Abdullâh bin Mas‘ûd used to give a religious talk to the people on every Thursday. Once a man said, “O Aba ‘Abdar-Rahman! (By Allâh) I wish if you could preach to us daily.” He replied, “The only thing which prevents me from doing so is (the fear) that I bore you, and I am considerate of you in preaching by selecting a suitable time just as the Prophet used to do with us, for fear of making us bored.” [Sahih Al-Bukhâri 1/70 and Muslim]</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Is the iPhone the Ultimate eBook Reader?</p>
<p>&#8220;People don’t read anymore,&#8221; said Steve Jobs last month. Try telling that to users of his company&#8217;s iPhone and iPod Touch devices, many of whom seem to be using the device as an eBook reader. Our network blog last100 theorized that what Jobs&#8217; really meant was, who needs the Amazon Kindle when you&#8217;ve got an iPhone that does a lot more? &#8220;Will a developer write an app to read books on the iPhone or Touch?&#8221; asked last100&#8217;s Daniel Langendorf. Actually, a few developers already have, and at least one is doing very well.</p>

<p>The TextOnPhone app launched last August, and with strictly organic growth now has 50,000 registered users. This week they announced a partnership with International Thriller Writers to bring fiction from the organizations members to the app, including top writers like James Patterson and Lee Child. TextOnPhone gives readers access to over 20,000 books and is planning to expand to support other phones later this month.</p>
<p>Another application, Readdle, gives users 50mb to store eBook content in a plethora of formats, include Plucker, which is the defacto mobile eBook reader format for Project Gutenberg, which houses over 20,000 free eBooks.</p>
<p>There are other iPhone book readers, including Free iPhone eBooks, which houses a limited selection of classics, and Scrollbox, which has a large public library and allows uses to upload their own content. With 4 million iPhones sold, and baked in development platform on the way, that begs the question &#8212; why buy a Kindle when you could buy an iPhone or iPod Touch?</p>
<p>The Kindle does very few things with its black and white screen. It reads books, it checks some RSS feeds and gets the news&#8230; that&#8217;s about it. The iPhone, on the other hand, lets you do all of that, and pretty much anything else you can do on the Internet. And it&#8217;s a phone. And a portable media player. With sites like eBooks.com out there, which sells over 100,000 books, most in the PDF format that Readdle supports, theoretically the same content available on the Kindle is available on the iPhone.</p>
<p>The only things the Kindle has over Apple&#8217;s device is speed (books are automatically downloaded wirelessly), and cost (you&#8217;re not paying monthly for a phone service subscription but still get a constant EVDO connection). The former could theoretically be tackled by a company willing to sell eBooks directly to iPhone users, and the latter isn&#8217;t a big deal since most people are paying for a phone anyway.</p>
<p>The only other reasons I can think of why someone might choose a Kindle over and iPhone or iPod Touch is the form factor &#8212; is it easier to hold while reading?, the screen &#8212; is it easier to read on?, and the battery life &#8212; is it really that much better? Not owning either device personally, I can&#8217;t make a determination on any of those points. But clearly, what Jobs meant when he said &#8220;people don&#8217;t read anymore&#8221; was &#8220;if people want to read, they should just use an iPhone.&#8221;</p>
