The Barcelona Chair is so named because it was exclusively designed for the Barcelona World Fair of 1929 as part of the German Pavilion. The design resulted from collaboration between the famous Bauhaus architect Mies van der Rohe and his long time partner and companion, the architect and designer, Lilly Reich. Only recently have the contributions for Reich been acknowledged.[citation needed] The Pavilion or Barcelona Chair is an icon of the “modern classical” style. Its design was inspired by its predecessors, the campaign and folding chairs of the Pharaohs and the Romans.

Material
The Barcelona Chair is a unique and striking piece of furniture comprised of:

Metal Legs: Usually polished or chromed stainless steel, but sometimes aluminum. The bar metal is shaped and welded, ground and polished.

Tufted leather upholstery: A patchwork checkerboard of piped leather and leather covered buttons, stretched gently across firm foam cushions.

Leather Straps: Behind and beneath the back rest and seat cushions – matching leather straps are riveted (or sometimes screwed) to the frame.

Fastening Systems: For the most part the Cushions are fasted to the frame and straps with buckles, (beneath the seat) and poppers at the back. Some modern variations include buckles in both places, fabric ties or even Velcro.

Suggested Retail Price : Chrome starting at US $4083, Stainless steel starting at US $6235
